With discussions of redeveloping TTC bus lands at the southwest corner of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue, St. Paul councillor Michael Walker proposed it be replaced with a youth centre. The players of a North Toronto girls’ soccer team enjoy playing the game, win, lose or draw. However, losing nearly every game in past seasons inspired a documentary, Dead in the Water, revolving around the girls’ never say die spirits. But in the midst of filming the documentary, the team’s fate began to change, and the underdogs actually captured the title!

A once dreary-looking laneway adjacent to Yonge between St. Germain Avenue and Melrose Avenue received a makeover of epic proportions. Graffiti-riddled walls were painted over, producing a bright mural with the theme of an old-time village marketplace. Teens from Delisle Youth Services, with other community groups, took five weeks for the cleanup.

Rosedale resident Margaret McCain’s long list of accomplishments grew even longer this past year as she became the first female to be presented with a fellowship from Upper Canada College. She continues to be a child advocate and spokesperson for family violence, 20 years after creating the new “Best Start” program for early childhood education.

Dr. Peter Adamson has performed plastic surgery in impoverished parts of Russia on disfigured orphans since the early part of 1992. His week-long missions give orphans a better chance at finding foster homes, and his lectures help Russian doctors advance their plastic surgery methods. The doctor and his ever growing Canadian contingent are not compensated for their work.
